Bio
I must say, I had a pretty good childhood. I can’t sit here and say I have had a rough upbringing or I had to fight my way through the streets. I have been blessed for the most part from the very start. Don’t get me wrong, I had no silver spoon and I had my growing pains, but God had his eye on me since I was born. I was born a half an hour before my twin brother, Jason. My twin was born with physical and mental handicaps, and the instant he was born the doctors didn’t expect him to live long. We spent 9 months together inside my mother’s belly, and yet he was born with severe health problems and I was born 100% healthy. My twin beat the doctor’s odds, and he lived to be 18 years old when they didn’t expect him to live for more than a few weeks. Blessed. I do wish my twin could still be alive today, but I have decided and I promised him I would make a mark for both of us before it is my time to go from this earth as well. When I was younger I definitely had an interesting blend to my character. On one end I ran with my older brother and his friends, and that turned me into the tomboy that I was ; and then on the other hand I spent a lot of time with my older sister and that taught me all the girly stuff and helped shaped me as a woman . Despite my attempts, my siblings kept me guarded from a lot, so to some extent I was a sheltered little girl that couldn’t go far from the front stoop. Still I thought I knew it all. Even today, my family is my strength and back bone. I have a huge extended family. My mother is one of ten kids and my dad is one of seven kids, and as a result I have over 50 cousins. My family is one that has a bond that I can say I am truly proud of, and I am beyond proud to be a member of .
My parents were middle income parents, but they raised us with the belief that we were blessed and God gave us everything we needed. I attended public schools, elementary P.S 220 , and Halsey for junior high school . Then my family moved to Georgia right before my 8th grade school year, and we stayed in Morrow and Jonesboro. After about two years we moved back to New York. I then attended Forest Hills High School and graduated in 1997 and then went on to Hofstra University in Long Island. I majored in journalism and minored in political science. I still believe that my dorm life played more of a role in preparing me for my future than some of my education. Growing up and living on my own was the best part of my college experience. In my senior year I begin working for Emmis Communications, part time around my school schedule. I graduated in 2001, and immediately started working at Jive Records full time doing business and legal affairs; while I still did writing for the station and handled the celebrity interviews for the Hot 97 and Kiss FM website. After a year at Jive , I started working at Hot 97 in the programming department, where I have been since.
I started reading before I was even in kindergarten. I LOVED to read. I always had a book in my hand. My brother would tease me and call me a nerd, and make me cry. Even though the image wasn’t cool, you couldn’t tell me that my Babysitters Club book collection wasn’t the coolest thing , even second to my Gem doll. I ordered about 5 books a month from my scholastic book order club when I was in elementary school. I always qualified for the bonus gift. I was in the spelling bees and story telling contests at my school, anything involving reading. My love for reading eventually turned into a love for writing. I wrote poems and short stories for fun. Then when I got to Junior High school and they had a newspaper, and I started working with the writing staff. Then in high school, I volunteered to be an editor on the school newspaper, amongst acting in the school plays and dancing in the school performances , etc .
Then in college, I was the President of NABJ (National Association of Black Journalists), and I wrote for both the school newspapers and magazine. As a communications major, I did writing and reporting for the school television station, as well as participated in the television talk shows and productions. After graduation, I wrote for mainstream magazines, such as XXL, Source and Don Diva. Throughout my growing career in radio, my passion to write was never defused. My dream to obtain my law degree also never defused, and so I went back to pursue my law degree in September of 2005 (6 months after I received my book deal).
As of July of 2007, I will have completed my second year of law school and my second book will be available in stores. I will be working on my third book for my second book deal, which will be a follow up to Diva Diaries, as well as completing the screenplay for the Diva Diaries movie that is in development. I feel blessed, and I hope God continues to bless me. I also hope Jason is looking down on me rooting us on.
